In Japanese, nokori means "the remainder", what is left over, and yet still whole. It is a word rooted in an old philosophy: that nothing is without value, and nothing need be discarded simply because it no longer fits it’s original form.

Each Nokori Mala is born this way. Beads gathered from past creations; some remembered, some already loose from their origins, their names and lineage no longer known. They are given a second life, strung together with the same intention as any bespoke piece.

I do not always know the name of every stone in a Nokori Mala. Some have travelled too far from where they began to be traced back. And I have come to feel that this is not a loss, but part of the offering, because a mala does not ask to be understood before it is felt.

These are not made to order. They arrive as they are, one of one, and they will not be repeated.

How to choose yours

Do not search for the "right" one. Let your eye rest, and notice where it settles. Whatever draws you; a colour, a weight, a single bead that catches the light. You will know when it is already yours. This is the quiet intention behind each nokori mala, that what remains finds who it was always meant for.
